I have been teaching at the Playschool since 1996. I have a degree in Music Education, but my love is for preschool children. My husband is a retired physician. We have three adult children and two grandchildren. Our two sons and granddaughter are Playschool alumni. My hobbies are knitting, reading, and light gardening in the summer.
I am a lifelong Alaskan. I started working with youth professionally in high school at King Tech, studying and working as a preschool teacher for 2.5 years in their Early Childhood Education program. I continued this work throughout college employed by the Alaska Humanities Forum's Take Wing Alaska program working with Yupik teenagers and then as a middle school after school program tutor with the Fairbanks North Star School District. I also continued working as a preschool teacher and nannied. A year prior to graduating with a Bachelor's of Emergency Management degree from UAF, I started my career as a 911 Emergency Dispatcher. Three years later, just shortly after our daughter was born, we moved back to Anchorage to be closer to family. I left my career in emergency services and became a stay-at-home mom, while once again nannying and babysitting. This fall, my daughter will start her first year of preschool at St. Mary's, and I decided this is the perfect time and perfect place to resume my career in early childhood education!
Rachel graduated from Harding University with a Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education. Her love of traveling took her to Scotland for a semester for her pre-student teaching as well as Panama City, Panama for 6 months after college to teach English with the Let’s Start Talking program. She moved to Alaska from Ohio over 8 years ago. After spending a year on the advisory council when her oldest was at the Playschool, she knew this was a uniquely special place and is so proud to be a part of the staff here now!
Veronica grew up in Juneau, Alaska moving to Anchorage in 1995 to attend the University of Alaska. While working toward her degree in Elementary Education she worked at the YMCA Before and After School Programs. She also taught swim lessons at the Y for children ages 3 months to 12 years.
I graduated with an AA in Medical Assisting from Hawaii. I then enjoyed taking Child Development Courses at Compton Community College. I worked for an After School Program, taught Sunday school classes, and worked in youth involvement. I got married and that is the moment my love for working with children bloomed. I became a Lead Teacher at Moorpark San Jose Pre-School and had 2 beautiful girls and my adorable son. July 2011, we moved to Anchorage and St. Mary Playschool was my first job here in Anchorage and have been here since. I enjoy watching movies with my family, eating bar-b-q, rearranging my furniture at home, and thrift shopping is my therapy.
I received my Bachelor's degree in 1999 from a small liberal arts college in Indiana. I then moved with my husband to Alaska for the adventure of it and we decided to make it our home state. I started my journey in early childhood education by assisting in a Montessori preschool and then continued on to receive a Montessori teaching certificate through a training center in Colorado. I have also enjoyed working at Head Start and owned my own preschool when my kiddos were younger.
